Hampi stands as one of the global tourist spots in world Heritage. The Hampi Utsav or Hampi Festival or Vijaya Utsav is a cultural extravaganza that has been celebrated since he times of the Vijayanagar reign. Hampi, Karnataka once the capital of the Vijayanagar Empire, comes alive during the lively festival of dance and music. Hampi Festival is a three day event generally commemorated in January. Hampi has always bestowed many surprises and eye catching events for all its tourists from time immemorial. Pampa Aadi Kavi of Kannada literature has therefore portrayed Karnataka and it is the motherland to art, culture, literature, dance and drama from the time immemorial. It is here that the culture of Kannada has emerged and spread all over the world. Art, culture and literary festivals have become an integral part of life of its people. Starting from the time of Kadambas the very first and free Kannada empire until the rule of Wodeyars of Mysore and then on under the auspice of the Government these festivals have played a supplementary role in the lives of the people of Karnataka.

The Hampi Festival is being organized in Hampi, which stands evidence to the political, cultural, religious and social zenith the Indian life reached and it has another intention of providing a glimpse of the past era to the present day generation. The Festival, which showcases the Cultural extravaganza of the land, will definitely provide some relief to the people from their daily grind.

Many artistic events are being prepared in Hampi at various stages. Artistes of National and International status will perform through these stages. It also provides a platform to the local artists. The Bhuvaneshwari procession that is programmed to be held on the final day of the festival is a unforgettable spectacle. The odd natural background and the throngs of people perched on the tops of boulders of the Hampi gives the spectator a wonderful experience.

The unique draw in this festival is the Heritage Walk along with many competitions including the famous wrestling competitions. The festival will be inaugurated in the afternoon of the first day and the events will continue until late night. During the next two days cultural events will be held in the three podia that have specially built for the purpose.

This festival brings back the light and happiness in people's lives. Most distinguished people from the field of art, dance, music and drama come to this fair and entertain the guests with their brilliant performances while the graceful steps of dancers mesmerize its audiences. Other attraction include fireworks, puppet shows, all combined to recreate the grandeur of the bygone era. ‘Janapada Kalavahini', a concert of folk songs adding special attraction has been introduced recently in this festival. ‘Jumbo Savari' is held in the town of Hospet, it is quite similar to Dashera elephant march. ‘Light and sound show' surrounding the monuments across the 15 km of Hampi running through the banks of Tungabadra is another attraction for its visitors.

On the final day the Bhuvaneshwari Procession that is the highlight of the festival will be taken out from the favmous Sri Naddana Veera-bhadreshwara Temple up till the Sri Virupaksha Temple. Cultural events will continue well after the Procession. A stunning show of firecrackers and sparklers from the grand finale of the festival.

This festival of dance and music also known as Vijaya Utsav of Karnataka, is an occasion for people from the country to enjoy the open-air atmosphere and celebrations aimed at promoting tourism and to increase the awareness about this city.

With an intention to give an academic touch to the Hampi Festival, it has been envisaged to invite student troupes from all the Universities in the State and also the neighboring States have been requested to send students from their respective Universities. The Festival is not only a communicative meeting to the maestros of cultural field but it also acts a minor depicting our rich historical and cultural heritage to the outside world.
